Průvodce suchými víny.

Red or white? Whichever you choose, one thing is certain: this first choice isn’t the last, and many connoisseurs quickly add that they want to drink a dry wine. We’ve selected the most famous representatives of this category – and you can get better acquainted with them in today’s article.

Dry wine and sugar: a little theory for the uninitiated

Dry wines tend to be the least sweet and most acidic choices offered on wine menus. But what does this actually mean in practice?

After the fermentation process is complete, some unfermented sugar still remains in the wine. And it is precisely the amount of this residual sugar which has a fundamental influence on the resulting taste of the wine. Dry wines then contain the least amount of residual sugar – at most, 4 g per liter.

Did you know that … ? In connection with wine, we can also talk about sugar content. This concept refers to the amount of sugar in the grapes. It’s generally true that riper grapes have a higher sugar content. Some classification systems use this criterion when assessing the quality of wines.

Dry white wine? Get acquainted with the most popular varieties used to produce it

You can enjoy it year round, but it’s especially sought after in sweltering summers for its refreshing ability. Yes, we’re talking about white wine.

Did you know that … ? Just because a wine is dry doesn’t mean that you can’t discern fruity tones in it. You can appreciate the aromas of cherries, strawberries, currants, and many other fruits even in the absence of sugar.

Dry white wine and the favorite variety used to make it: try Chardonnay

The world-popular Chardonnay variety has its provenance in the French wine region of Burgundy. And from there it spread worldwide – it can be found on every continent and in nearly every country in Europe. And it’s no wonder – Chardonnay yields white wines of exceptional quality. Additionally, they’re often suitable for archiving.

Grüner Veltliner – a dry white wine that you can treat yourself to right away

This traditional variety, which is the most widespread one in the Czech Republic, originally came from Austria. Wine made from these grapes tastes its best when it’s young. Blends for vintage and sparkling wines are usually made using Grüner Veltliner grapes.

Did you know that …? Grüner Veltliner is also grown in Slovakia, Hungary and Germany. Altogether, the vineyards planted with this variety have an expanse of 18 thousand hectares. To give you a better idea of their extent, that’s more than the entire area of Lichtenstein.

Dry white wine? Its synonym is Sauvignon Blanc

This typical representative of grapes used for dry white wine probably originated in the French region of Bordeaux.

One of the world’s most famous Sauvignons is Sancerre. The grapes grown to make this wine come from three separate terroirs – it’s therefore unsurprising that Sancerre wines are frequently made as cuvée wines.

Dry red wine, or why it’s good to get the blues

Red wines are made from blue grape varieties. You can enjoy them year round, but especially in the winter months, when they delight and warm your soul. What are the most common varieties used for dry red wines?

Did you know that …? The shade of a red wine is greatly influenced by plant pigments called anthocyanins. These are found in the grapes’ skins and are released as the mash ferments. The same pigment is also found in red cabbage and roses.

Cabernet Sauvignon – a dry red wine from Bordeaux

The seventh most cultivated variety in the world is popular for its taste, aroma, and its ability to adapt to all kinds of soils and climate conditions. Its origin is most likely to be found in Bordeaux, as early as in the period of Roman colonization. The wineries of the French city Pauillac mainly produce wines of this variety.

Syrah, a dry red wine that goes well with a white wine

Syrah is an elegant blue variety used to make dry wine. The grapes are grown in the norther part of the French Rhône valley. Wines produced from Syrah are distinguished by their great potential for maturation. In the same region, winemakers sometimes add a small amount of mash or must from the white Viognier variety, which is also grown there, into their red wines. The result is a complex wine with a perfect texture.
