Soave, the white pearl of Italy

Soave víno

One of the best-selling Italian white wines, Soave, boasts the name of a medieval town in northeastern Italy. The hills in the area of Verona gave rise to quality wines that – like many others – have had to struggle to regain their renown. Let’s take a look together at some ways Soave wines may interest or even surprise you.

Welcome to Soave, part of the Veneta wine region

Veneta is a region whose wine became famous in ancient Roman times. Soave is one of the most productive areas in the region. It profits from its volcanic soil, but at the same time the vines are threatened by foggy weather, which isn’t very good for grapes.

Upon a closer inspection, and with a deeper knowledge of the terroir, Soave’s predominantly sloping and well-oriented locations differ from one another – so the wines are labeled in different ways, depending on their quality. But besides the wines, Soave may also capture your interest with historical sites, and nature lovers will also enjoy themselves in the area.

Did you know that…

Soave comes from the Latin word “Suavis,” which means gentle or tender. Getting a name like this is truly a great prerequisite for a wine to attain popularity.

The inseparable duo of Soave and Garganega

Soave wine is inextricably linked with grapes of the Garganega vines, which represent its main ingredient – at minimum, they represent 70 % of its content. During the blending process for ordinary Soave wines the Trebbiano di Soave, Chardonnay, and Pinot Bianco varieties are used.

Garganega grapes are distinguished by their harder skin, and therefore they resist the above-mentioned climate with frequent fogs better than others. The fogs can harm grapes by causing the growth of fungi or contributing to the development of certain diseases.

Soave wine on the way from quantity to quality

As we already mentioned in the introduction, Soave wines acquired – fairly recently – a bad reputation, which they have managed to rehabilitate. The decline in their quality was connected with administrative interventions and an attempt to increase production even at the cost of including lower-quality vineyards in the original Soave territory.

Also, winemakers were using the Trebbiano Toscano grape variety, which is considered to be of far lower value than Trebbiano di Soave, with increasing frequency in the coupage.

The restoration of their name, and mainly the renewed faith in Soave wines began in the 1990s and one of the factors contributing to it was the position taken by the authorities who determined further classifications of Soave wines, and created the two superior categories of Soave Classico DOC and Soave Superiore DOCG.

Wines that come from the original historical territory, especially the countryside between the towns of Soave and Monteforte d’Alpone, are now labeled as Soave Classico DOC. In the case of Soave Superiore DOCG wines, there is a more stringent regulation of the vineyards’ planting and yields. These wines can also bear the Riserva designation if they have a minimum alcohol content of 12.5 % and they fulfill the further condition of having matured for at least a year before being sold.

A luxurious specialty of the region is Recioto di Soave DOCG – a white wine produced using the method called passito, from half-dried grapes of the Garganega variety. It is also prepared as a sparkling or a liqueur wine.

Did you know that…

The term “passito” means that the grapes were dried for a period of as long as three months, and at least once a week they were turned over by hand. This winemaking method leads to a strong, sweet wine.

What will you find fascinating about Soave wines?

A typical Soave is a dry wine with a tinge of fruit, and you’ll be able to distinguish tones of peach, cantaloupe, or perhaps orange peel. Those wines that complete their maturation process in oak barrels develop a nutty bouquet, and as time passes they also take on flavors of marmalade or honey.

Selected Soave wines have a good potential for archiving, and that’s why we’re offering them in our selection.

If we have enticed you into trying this wine, make the most of it by acquiring some poultry, fish, or cheeses to go with it, and serve it chilled at 10–12 degrees. A unique experience awaits you.
